Meet Recap

This year’s Genesee County Invitational was probably the most exciting county meet the Grand Blanc Bobcats have had in years with a tough battle against the Fenton Tigers. GB has traditionally dominated this meet with the team now securing it’s 27th win in the 28 years of the meet, having only lost to Powers in 2000. Based on the “psych sheet” (a ranking of the entries for each event), Fenton was projected to win the meet by approximately 20 points. The Bobcats were not going to let that happen, at least not without a fight, and they did just that!

On Thursday, the divers got the team off to a great, motivational start placing themselves in 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 10th headed into Saturday’s finals where they finished 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 10th. Seniors Jared Berger and Tai Sims have worked extremely hard over the last few years with a goal of being the top divers at Counties by their senior year and they have definitely succeeded. The senior divers earned scores making them eligible to apply for All-American, and Berger narrowly missed the GB 11 Dive varsity record. First year divers, Dakota Blakley and Logan Martin-Nagy performed remarkably for their first 11 Dive competition and earned a great amount of experience.

At Friday’s swim prelims, Fenton came prepared and competed strong, but the GB Boys were not backing down. 75% of the Bobcats’ races lead to personal best times and every team members earned a personal best in at least one of their events. Of GB’s 72 entries, they qualified for finals in 38 positions, 25 of which were in the top 8 (championship heat).

The swimmers and divers returned on Saturday and continued to drop even more time, maintained and improved their placements, and earned multiple MISCA qualifcations. The Bobcats’ top point earners were JD Walker, Kay Whitmore, Jonah Curtis, Michael Harding, Max Whitmore, Jarod Williams, Devon Bryant, and Harrison Adams; each contributed over 30 points to the team’s overall score.

“It was a great meet and the boys did an amazing job, surpassing the goals times I had set for them. This was also great preparation for the Conference Meet, giving the team the experience of what it takes at prelims to get themselves in the best positions for finals and earning points. I am one proud coach right now!” – Coach Emily Overmyer
